In the 1980’s, the temple has seen tremendous damages. This prompted the national government to make a move and intensify its preservations efforts. It also received aid from the Japanese government. Now, a third of the rocks that form the temple’s base is artificial, but has made the temple sturdier through the years.

During high tide, it is impossible to cross the rock base, as it is extremely dangerous. However, during low tide, there are some people who brave visiting the base for certain beliefs.

If you can’t visit the temples due to huge waves, you can simply visit the onshore temples such as the Penyawang, which is considered a spiritual proxy to those who can’t visit the Tanah Lot temple. There are smaller temples nearby where believers go to when they want to ask for blessings especially in regards to agrarian life. Once you are done visiting the temples, you might also want to visit street shops selling traditional snacks, including the jaja kelapon, a local dessert made from grated coconut.
