Semenggoh Orangutans & Annah Rais Longhouse
Start your day with an exhilarating wildlife adventure at the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre. Just 22 km from Kuching, this unique sanctuary in Sarawak is home to rescued and rehabilitated orangutans, honey bears, hornbills, porcupines, storks, eagles, barking deer, and monkeys. Nestled within a 740-hectare virgin forest, witness these incredible creatures being trained to survive in the wild.
After this unforgettable experience, continue your journey to the Annah Rais Longhouse, home to the Bidayuh people, the second largest ethnic group in Sarawak, traditionally known as “Land Dayak” or “Engineer of Bamboo”. Located 100 km east of Kuching and near the Indonesian border, the drive to Annah Rais takes about one and a half hours.
Upon arrival, admire the splendid architecture of the longhouse, primarily constructed from bamboo. Experience the daily routines of the villagers, including rice pounding and winnowing, basket and mat weaving, and bamboo carving.
A highlight of the visit is the “Baruk” or headhouse, a unique and significant structure situated at the heart of the longhouse. Historically used as a fort to protect the village from attacks, inside the Baruk, you’ll find real human skulls hanging around the central fireplace and their sacred war drum.
Conclude your tour with a comfortable drop-off at your hotel, leaving you with memories of Sarawak’s rich cultural and wildlife heritage.
